Why are dogs man's best friend?

The dog, Canis familiaris, is a direct descendent of the gray wolf, Canis lupus: In other words, dogs as we know them are domesticated wolves. Not only their behavior changed; domestic dogs are different in form from wolves, mainly smaller and with shorter muzzles and smaller teeth.

How and when this domestication happened has been a matter of speculation. It was thought until very recently that dogs were wild until about 12,000 years ago. But DNA analysis published by scientists  date about 130,000 years ago for the transformation of wolves to dogs. This means that wolves began to adapt to human society long before humans settled down and began practicing agriculture.

Scientists believe wolves were first attracted to human camps to scavenge for leftover food. Over time, some wolves started traveling with the nomadic humans.

There’s even scientific evidence supporting the bond between humans and dogs. When people look into each other’s eyes, we bond emotionally and release a hormone called oxytocin. A study led by scientists have found that when dogs and people gaze into each other’s eyes, the same hormone is released in both the humans and the dogs.

Dog breeds

Dogs  are classified into 7 different groups. Herding, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Working, Hounds, Terriers, and Toy breeds.  They all have different purposes and based on uses and characteristics, these different groups are used as a way to identify dogs.   Herding Dogs:   The Herding group was created in 1983 and is the newest group that was classified by the American Kennel Club.  Before this group was created, the dogs that are in this group currently were previously a part of the Working group.  A Herding dog is described as a dog that is easily trained to help with herding purposes.  Some of the dog breeds that fit under this category would be the Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, and Old English Sheepdogs among others.  These dogs are great for herding for farm purposes among others, but require lots of space to run around and exercise. Sporting Dogs:   Dogs in the Sporting group are...

Why have a dog as a Pet?

The first question one always thinks when having a pet at home is which one? Should I keep a parrot, a dog, a cat or rabbit or a fish??. It's pretty difficult to decide which one from the vast range of animals or birds or even reptiles and insects to keep as pet. To start with i recommend you to close your eyes and think about the picture of the animal or bird or any living thing other than human which makes you feel happy. We all want to be happy and owning a pet must give you a source of joy and happiness. Making it simpler I would ask you a simple question. A stray dog comes to your courtyard. what do you do? How will you react on seeing a dog? Will you chase it away or open the gate and allow it to enter and move around while you go to the kitchen to bring some biscuits or cookies. If you allow the dog to enter your house compound, feed it, hug and play with it even when your family members like your mom or your dad ask you not to; then this shows yo...

Vaccinating your dog

By  vaccinating your pet dogs,  you help protect  your  furry friend from various diseases including rabies, distemper, parvovirus, infectious hepatitis, bordetella, feline leukemia and others.  Vaccinating your pets  annually helps lessen the spread of infectious diseases throughout  pet  populations. For  Dogs : Vaccines for canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies  are  considered core vaccines. These include vaccines against Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi and Leptospira bacteria. Why vaccination your pet is important? Vaccines work by exposing your pet’s immune system to an infection. This causes the animal’s white blood cells to start producing antibodies. The antibodies bind to the infection and neutralise it, working to kill off cells that have been infected. Your pet’s body will remember this process and if their system is ever struck by the same infection, they’ll autom...
