Why have a dog as a Pet?

The first question one always thinks when having a pet at home is which one?

Should I keep a parrot, a dog, a cat or rabbit or a fish??.

It's pretty difficult to decide which one from the vast range of animals or birds or even reptiles and insects to keep as pet.

To start with i recommend you to close your eyes and think about the picture of the animal or bird or any living thing other than human which makes you feel happy.

We all want to be happy and owning a pet must give you a source of joy and happiness.

Making it simpler I would ask you a simple question.

A stray dog comes to your courtyard. what do you do? How will you react on seeing a dog?
Will you chase it away or open the gate and allow it to enter and move around while you go to the kitchen to bring some biscuits or cookies.

If you allow the dog to enter your house compound, feed it, hug and play with it even when your family members like your mom or your dad ask you not to; then this shows your passion for dog.

Same applies to Cat or any animal or bird.

This natural instinct of love for another being not human in body form is sufficient to prove that you love dogs.

A dog is considered a man's best friend and has been so for thousands of years. You will find innumerable real life stories of faithful dogs and their masters and how they make great company.

So once you have decided to have a dog as a pet. Next questing arises which dog??

This i will discuss in detail in the next chapter on " How to make a decision on choosing the dog breed as a pet?

Feeding your dog

Most veterinarians recommend feeding your dog twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening. Puppies under five months of age should be fed three to four times a day in small quantities.    It’s important to remember all dogs are individuals, and what diet might be fine for your friend’s dog may be completely inappropriate for your dog. When it comes to a daily diet for your dog, it’s important to consult with your vet. The amount of food your dog needs will largely depend on the size, breed and age of your dog, as well as how regularly it exercises. The key is to ensure you don’t overfeed or underfeed your dog. If ever you’re unsure, ask your vet to assess your dog’s diet and nutrition, and the condition of its body and overall health. Always ensure your dog is well hydrated. This means making sure their water bowl is filled up at all times and is changed daily, so they can help themselves to water whenever they need or want. Domesticated dogs a...

Grooming your pet dog

Grooming your dog means keeping the exterior part of your dog's body neat and clean. Every dog will groom itself. These are superficial grooming like licking it's paws or shaking it's body to drain out water from it's coat. Scratching its own back and so on. These are essential but not sufficient. The act of grooming your dog should ideally be started when it is a puppy of around 7 -8 weeks of age. Before this age the mother takes care of it's pups grooming with occasional help from its owner.   Following are the benefits of grooming your pet dog. Good hygiene and smell. Check and treat fleas and skin infections. Early detection of any skin and health issues. Ear infection can be avoided or controlled. Trimming nails reduces the risk of developing bad posture or bone deformations Healthy and shiny coats which shed a lot less when groomed regularly. Get rid of matted coats. Makes your dog and your house look better. Builds trust and bonding. ...

Vaccinating your dog

By  vaccinating your pet dogs,  you help protect  your  furry friend from various diseases including rabies, distemper, parvovirus, infectious hepatitis, bordetella, feline leukemia and others.  Vaccinating your pets  annually helps lessen the spread of infectious diseases throughout  pet  populations. For  Dogs : Vaccines for canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies  are  considered core vaccines. These include vaccines against Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi and Leptospira bacteria. Why vaccination your pet is important? Vaccines work by exposing your pet’s immune system to an infection. This causes the animal’s white blood cells to start producing antibodies. The antibodies bind to the infection and neutralise it, working to kill off cells that have been infected. Your pet’s body will remember this process and if their system is ever struck by the same infection, they’ll autom...
